Face scanning technology and the under 16s social media ban

This week, a trial commenced in the United States that could drastically change how Facebook and Instagram operate globally. The trial in Oakland, which is expected to last six weeks, pits 29 US states against the two social media platforms’ owner, Meta. Four states – California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey – are running the jury case on behalf of the rest.

Some of the world’s biggest tech companies could be slugged a 2.5% levy on their digital advertising revenue, should they fail to strike commercial deals with Australian media organisations.

Australia’s online watchdog has launched federal court proceedings against messaging platform Telegram. The eSafety Commissioner is alleging the platform failed to remove terror-related content including videos of the Christchurch mosque massacre.
